I’m going to Malta. Wanna come with me?

Filed under: Life... — Joelle @ 4:46 pm

This fall, I decided that I’m going to go to Malta. It’s right under the south point of Italy. You can come with me if you want. It’s amazing there. It’s beautiful. I have this weird fascination with Malta. I’m obsessed with it and I’m GOING to go there soon. It all started with a Veggie-Tales movie. No joke. That’s a little weird actually. I laugh. The characters in the movie went to Malta to finish their mission, and it was really cheesy and stupid and I thought Malta was just dumb. But I was wrong. I love it now. I’m going there soon. You can come with me. This is my place:

Amazing huh?

malta_habor.jpg

Yea, i think so. That’s why I’m going there.

malta016.jpg

And you can come with me if you want. Just let me know.

And we can shop at the market and buy mangoes. ^_^  (haha)

1121769.jpg

And swim on the beach.

And take pictures.

And lose our breath over the beauty of it all.

That’s all. but I’m going there…someday…soon.

    Comment by sharon and mick — May 19, 2008 @ 3:44 pm

  17. well its nice to know that many are so fascinated with malta, one for the simple fact that i am Maltese, and two because i am a tourism student plus an English teacher so i have quite a few encounters with tourists.
I completely disagree with the last comment posted by Sharon and Mick. Malta is a higly developed country that got independence just around 50 years ago and yet is operating on its own and is doing fine.
For your information i never got bitten by a flea and even if so please note that they also come from animals such as pets so doesnt mean dirt. Also you must have either never travelled on any other public transport in Europe or were simply blinded – the buses here in Malta are privately owned to keep in simple terms, so the bus drivers constantly clean their ‘2nd homes’ and you will also note this by the many pictures of saints, family, football teams etc that there will be on the buses. the downfall to this is that the busdrivers are very possesive over their buses and sometimes tend to be rude. as such as dirt as Marica said its true about the tourist since in summer we have such a great influx.
However to all you dreamers, i would like to point out that i am definate that two pictures are not from Malta, i am not sure where you got them from however they seem to belong more to a caribean island then what Malta is a southern mediterranean island. You are not going to find peace and quietness here but quite a lot of hussle and bustle, since many think its a completely isolated island.
Anyways i hope that clairfied some things. oh also as you can see the maltese can fluently speak english simply because it is our 2nd official language.

  18. Hey there-
I’ve been to many places in Europe but I still dream and long for Malta. I’ll admit that on my first day, I wasn’t all that impressed. But I was determined to see all of it and my original two day excursion turned into 7 days. I couldn’t leave because it was just more and more beautiful every day. The people are beautiful and fabulous, the water is heavenly and the nightlife is just jumping. I had no idea that all of the Med’s beautiful people party in Malta in the summer. But it also is very understated and just a simple place to be. Which is why I love it so much. I’m an American, so I used to being inundated with flash and froth, but this is just simply beautiful. Go and enjoy and talk to the locals. They’re wonderful.

Australia is great don’t get me wrong but Malta it’s awsome you seem to have more time to do things like work as well as play there is no doubting it Malta is the place for me and my family my two boys love it the beaches are the best, I always say don’t listen to what you hear Go see for yourself ………………

  51. You’re photos certainly are stunning; however, my family and I were in Malta a couple months ago and what we saw bore NO RESEMBLANCE to your photos at all!!! The people were lovely, and never have we met as many nice people in one place, but Malta’s redeeming qualities end there! It was filthy, hot with 100% humidity, and dusty. The beaches were dirty and the water was brown. There was hardly ANY greenery as most of Malta is covered in stone, and the cost of a holiday there is not as cheap as one might believe. In addition, the country is led by a highly corrupt government that is in partnership with the Catholic Church: ex. birth control & any other form of contraception is frowned upon, and as a result my family and I saw MANY teenage girls who were either pregnant or pushing strollers. The cost of living went up dramatically after Malta joined the EU, yet people’s salaries remain low. The church and the state have little to say about the hardships of the Maltese, but plenty to say about how the people lead their personal lives. I also had the opportunity to meet many tourists from both Europe and North America, and the general consensus was that Malta was a place to which they would never return. My parents and I will have to agree with them! Don’t waste your money.

  52. Hey! We went to Malta in 2005 (in August). LOVED IT!!! Want to go again! My hubby was born in Vittoriosa (Birgu) and introduced me to his aunts, uncles & cousins and to the Festa ta San Lawrenz (is that how you spell it???). Stayed at St Paul’s and swam in the bay off the rocks near Sirens Aquatic Club! Ab Fab!!!!! My husband would love to move there to live but I’d be happy to go for 3 or 4 months. It felt very safe and very friendly , because they speak English and my Maltese is pretty bad!

Have fun you guys! I”m jealous!!!!!

  59. Your pics are great….some are not of Malta though – the market one and the beach one. I live in Malta so can confirm that. The post about corrupt govt etc made me laugh ;-) don’t know where all that post was coming for but I guess some people like to leave negative comments about anything!
Malta is beautiful…in summer it is very hot though but it seems that most tourists dont seem to mind that. You will get a bit of everything here, culture, history, archeology, parties…. just one thing please – many tourists from certain countries can be downright rude, so act like you would in your own country. You will find that the maltese are genuine people who sincerely like to help.

  60. well hello everyone !!! this is nikita from malta and i must say that malta is wonderful place to live in!! yes like other countries malta has SOME disadvantages … but i must say other countries have A LOT and A LOT of disadvantages which arent very nice for all those tourists who wish to visit such a country!! well malta has everything !!its wonderful…. because it embraces wonderful landscapes, historic buildings and some are more than 7000 years old and which are the oldest buildings in the whole world!! there are just a few in the pics above and believe me if you are surprised with these photos well you mustnt be because you havent seen nothing!well in malta there are also historic cities filled with thousands of extraordinary buildings, all going back in history!! but altough history is the main thing in the maltese islands there are also places where to have fun especially in the weekends, wonderful beaches and even nature!! well malta has nature but gozo and comino … maltas sisters have much more nature than their sister!! i think that malta is a fantastic place to visit especially in summer (although sometimes its really hot)… where you can rest …. have fun with your family and even explore the beauty and the secrets of the heart of the mediterranean which are only yours to discover!! you see that altough malta is a small country …it offers much more !! so then, if you re going on a holiday (especially this summer )… come visit my island and i garantee that if its the first time…it wont be the last and you ll see which comments are saying the truth !!

p.s this is only a brief discribtion…there is much more to discover

  65. Had some spare time and just spent a few days in Malta earlier this month and certainly liked the place. Taxi’s are expensive, but generally fixed prices, drivers friendly (Not the mafia depicted in the local papers). Buses were old but cool to look at and as mentioned in another post each had their individual character. The place is clean / dirty depending on your prior experiences but I found it quite clean and pleasant. I am from Australia and working in Cyprus and my view is that Malta definately has a different character. Much like Cyprus there are many different “Layers” of Historical interest in Malta which was interesting for me as well. Valetta, the capital is a very nice walled city. I stayed at St Julians which is close to Valetta and a bit of a yuppy area but certainly nice and very good restaurants, only one I had to really wait for service the rest were great. One may come across an unpleasant person there but that happens everywhere, I can say the Maltese are one of the friendliest groups of people I have come across. The place has modern amenities that I saw so no stress there. The main charm of the place is that although it is small in size there is always something different to do somewhere on the island, visiting ruins, partying etc. I give it the thumbs up, Enjoy.

  66. My wife and I visited Malta in June 2007 and loved it. We found all the cities and villages quite clean. The public transit system is excellent, very reasonably priced and the busses cover the whole island. The busses are old but reliable and clean and sure have character. We chose local restaurants in which to eat, the food was good and reasonably priced, particularly the seafood.. Sightseeing is a must to appreciate Malta’s turbulent history, visit Mdina for sure. T he architecture is fantastisc. We found the people very friendly and helpful indeed. Is Malta hot in June? You’d better believe it’s hot, I think the temperature hit 45c (113f) while we were there.
Would I recommend a holiday in Malta? YUP

  75. Hi,

I had a holiday in Malta earlier this year and I loved the place. I recommend reading up on the Knights of Malta before visiting the island. “Angels of Iron” by Nicholas Prata is a good, stirring read. “Empires of The Sea” by Roger Crowley is also good. It’s pretty cold just now in Scotland and I find myself thinking about Malta often, and wishing I was walking along the promenade from Sliema to St. Julians. I will definitely return to Malta.

  80. Hi Guys,
Last year I took my family for a long overdue holiday to my country ie Malta. At first my intention was to see relos and friends and I didn’t think of Malta much since me and my wife lived there, been there, done that.for about thirty years. But since I had my teenage kids I took them places even I have never been. Places where tourists only visit,we also went on a cruze where we visited six othere western mediterranian countries which we loved to death ofcourse but I cannot forget that moment when it hit me of what a pearl is Malta It’s as we where entering the Grand harbour I noticed a lot of other tourists rushing up on deck to view the magnificence of our great fortresses my god what a sight they even started clapping, that moment filled me with such pride. And to those who went there and did’t like it I say What the hell is wrong with you.

  83. Hi guys, i am thinking about going on a English language course in malta.
this will mean living on malta for 3 months!

but i was wondering if anyone has any experiences with these language courses…
and how “advanced” these are, as my english is already decent.

will i be learning anything new on these courses?
besides being “forced” to speak English full time.

and i was wondering about the average age of people taking these courses (i heard they were generally pretty young ~16 years old)
i am 24 myself, and was wondering if i would be one of the oldest people taking the course.

not to discriminate against the younger crowd, but it would be nice to hang out with some guys and girls my age.

thanks alot, hope to get a response soon.

  84. Hi! I used to live in Malta for some time as a child and I completely took it fore granted. Oddly enough, when my family and I first moved back to the states, we moved to Pittsburgh, PA and when we settled into our new house, I realized I could see my neighbor’s window from my bedroom and in her window hung a Maltese flag! Apparently her husband went to Malta for some time during WWII. I thought it was the strangest thing because when I moved back to America hardly anyone I knew had ever even heard of Malta! Recently, I was also walking in a neighborhood on the North Side of Pittsburgh and I came across a building that was a shelter for the Knights of Malta in the 1920s. I remembered back to when I was a kid, the school I attended was housed in a castle where the Knights of Malta lived during the 1500s – with a moat and everything! There is so much history in Malta that I never took enough time to learn about when I was young, but I’ve recently become obsessed with learning that history now. Make sure you enjoy Malta’s history as much as its scenic beauty when you go – I’m sure that will make your trip there even more meaningful!

  85. And one more thing – I just read a comment about someone visiting MDina! VISIT MDINA!!!!! It was one of the most enchanting places I’ve ever visited – and I’ve been all around Europe, North Africa and South America. That place will NEVER leave your memory and that will be a wonderful thing!

  86. Malta is amazing! I just returned from there yesterday and I’m missing it loads!
The people are extremely friendly, and the views all over this small island are beautiful.
I stayed there for four days and hired a car, if anyone is thinking of going i’d definitely recommend hiring your own car! The island is only 19 miles long so it’s easy to get round and it’s the best way too!
The sea is clear blue, true beauty!
As Gozo is so close, it’s worth taking a ferry across to the ’sister island’ for a day!
The winding streets in both Gozo and Mdina (town in Malta) are enchanting; especially at night!!
There’s a great restaurant in St. Julian’s called paparazzi which I ended up going to two nights in a row, big portions for a great price, very delicious!
Visiting the Dingli cliffs was both scary and beautiful at the same time! Being so close to the Mediterranean Sea was breathtaking.
And also if you like to shop, Sliema and Valletta are the places to be!
This is getting very long so to conclude; I’ve travelled all over Europe, but I’ve got to say there was something very special and magical about Malta.
If you ever get the chance to go to this stunning island, TAKE IT!!!

  95. News of the Weird
    WEEK OF JULY 5, 2009
    LEAD STORY
A 48-year-old immigrant from Malta regularly hangs out in various New York City bars, but always on the floor, so that he can enjoy his particular passion of being stepped on. “Georgio T.” told The New York Times in June that he has delighted in being stepped on since he was a kid. While one playmate “wanted to be the doctor, (another) wanted to be the carpenter … I would want to be the carpet.” Nowadays, he carries a custom-made rug he can affix to his back (and a sign, Step on Carpet) and may lie face-down for several hours if the bar is busy. He is also a regular at “high foot-traffic” fetish parties, where dozens of stompers (especially women in stilettos) can satisfy their own urges while gratifying Georgio. [New York Times, 6-14-09]

  96. Well I was born in Malta and have lived here all my life. For most of my early years I lived in a place not far from where you can see in the 1st photo of your set..that’s St.Julian’s bay and even though nowadays it’s no longer a prominent fishing village, you still get the odd fishing boat or two tending to their nets in the early hours of the day. By the way the 4th picture in your set IS NOT Malta the houses you will note have sloping roofs and our house as a rule have flat roof-tops. Maltese, at least for now are of a mixed Mediterranean and European stock, most family have Italian, English, Irish, Sicilian, Greek and even Tunisian ancestory. So you can expect to see fair Caucasians with Blue eyes as well as dark skinned mediterrnean faces typical of the region.

Over all the Island is quite laid back, we do have a high population density but somehow we have so far always managed to live comfortably and avoid falling into the trap of fast-paced modernism. Also I don’t think I would be exaggerating if I were to say that as a nation we tend to love technologies. Almost everyone is fairly conversant with using mobile phones, SMS and 3G technologies. We have Wi-fi hotspots in several public and commercial areas (some of them free for instance at the McDonald’s diners) and a sizeable proportion of the population has ADSL internet access at home.

Public transport is nothing spectacular but functional and timetables tend to be a bit “flexible”. Over all you will get from point A to point B on time if you get on your way in advance to cater for any delays. If you come on holiday on a tight budget I would avoid using Taxi’s frequently as they are a bit on the expensive side considering that the distances covered are normally quite short.

As for restaurants, we have a multitude indeed they are a visible testament to our fascination and love of good cuisine. Putting it simply, we Maltese love our food. Social gatherings normally gravitate around meals washed down with a good quality wine or some of our locally produces Lager called Cisk. Pizza joints abound offering some interesting toppings and diverse sizes right up to the 16 inch variety offered by Buon Cafe in Paceville. However it’s not just Pizzas, you can try local cuisine savouring some of our specialities like Rabbit stew, fried Octopus in garlic and red wine, Lampuki (Dorado) in a savoury caper, garlic and tomato sauce or even Pork Chops in a tangy apple sauce served with crunchy oven-baked potatoes spiced up with fennel seeds and cracked pepper…and by the way these dishes aren’t only for the tourists I personally love most of the dishes I have mentioned above. :-)

Which brings us to entertainment, if you love clubbing, dancing, good food, playing bowling, or watching a good movie…you’ll find it all In Paceville. There is something for everyone over there especially over the weekends when most of the action takes place. In summer the weekend rule does not hold….Paceville becomes a hot bed of activity all week round right up to the end of August.

Then we have history, loads of it, some of it as old an mankind itself…not kidding! We have several Megalithic temples dated to the Stone Age szome of the more populare being the one at Hagar Qim (which most foreigner find very difficult to pronounce and I don’t blame them) and the other one on our sister Island of Gozo called Ggantija. We also have several Baroque-style churches and two fortified cities one at Mdina and one which serves as our Capital City Valletta. Most of these fortification were built by the Knight of the Order of St.John during their long stay on the Island.

If you’re more of a sporty type, you could decide to so some canoeing, wind-surfing or perhap go for some golf, skeet shooting or even archery ayt one of the local clubs. Gyms also abound and we have quite a few good athletics tracks should you prefer.

There is so much more to say about Malta, if you really get down to researching more material you’ll find tonnes more. I sincerely hope you’ll enjoy your stay on our Island and maybe go for a quick trip to our sister Island Gozo while you’re at it. ;-)

  99. I went to Malta 8 months ago cause I was fascinated by the movie TROY seeing how some of it was filmed there so I started to read about the history and looking at pictures, I stayed in the templar knights palace and everything I really went all out on this trip because it was also my honeymoon and I hate to burst your bubble but malta is not all that great the history is great and yes half of the place is beautiful especially madina the old capital city but the rest is ruins from so many wars over thousands of years and the worst thing about the place is that nothing stays open past like six or seven nothing except bars and some restaraunts and the buses stop running at 9 all this is great if u live there but to visit it´s a little ridiculous something I didn´t understand about the place is the population is 75% tourist but when u actually get there u will see there is no accomodations for the tourist.. I stayed for a week and after 3 days I had seen everything and couldnt wait to go home so go but go for 3-4 days after that it´s just frustrating..
